4 New Year’s Resolutions After Your Wisconsin Divorce

If this is your first holiday season after divorce, give yourself a round of applause. Perhaps it has not been easy, but you are getting through it. Now that the new year is right around the corner, it is a good time for some self-reflection and introspection.

We often get so caught up with the hustle and bustle of everyday life, we forget to stop and reflect on our actions, behavior, and goals. The start of a new year gives us that chance, and after a divorce, it can be especially helpful.

Here are a few New Year’s resolutions that can help in the year ahead:

1. Let Go of Your Anger

If lingering resentment toward your ex-spouse is an issue, this resolution might be the most important and rewarding one you can make. It is common when you get divorced to feel angry, hurt, betrayed, sad, or hopeless, and most of those feelings are directed toward your ex. Even if your anger is justified, try to make a conscious commitment to deal with your negative feelings, and then let them go.

2. Improve Communication With Your Ex

This can make a world of difference for you and your children. Having a positive co-parenting relationship can be difficult, but ignoring your ex out of spite and not attempting to have a good line of communication can make it all that more difficult. By focusing on improving communication between you and your ex, your children will thank you and so will your overall physical and mental well-being.

3. Set Time Aside For Yourself

Especially if you are a parent, it can be hard to find time to make this happen. You are always giving, giving, giving, but you also need to practice self-care. It could be something as simple as making sure you have time to enjoy your coffee in peace each morning or setting aside one evening a month as a special night when you get to relax and pamper yourself.
