7 Tips for Reducing Divorce Risk

Posted on in Divorce/Family Law

Waukesha, WI divorce attorneyYou cannot predict the future and determine whether your marriage will last. However, you can take certain steps to improve your marriage and reduce your risk of getting divorced. Whether you are a newlywed or have been married for decades, these seven tips can help you prevent divorce:

1. Take Care of Yourself

Meeting your own personal needs will help you be the best person you can for your partner. In order to do so, eat healthy foods and exercise regularly. You should also shower and groom yourself on a daily basis. Taking care of yourself is an easy way for you to keep the attraction alive.

2. Participate in Activities Together

One of the most effective ways to strengthen a marriage is to engage in a variety of fun activities with each other. Whether you take ballroom dancing classes, golf, or travel with your partner, you will be making happy memories and improving your marriage.

3. Spend Time Apart

This may seem counterintuitive, but spending time apart from your spouse can do wonders for your marriage. It will give you the opportunity to focus on your own career, hobbies, or interests and make you appreciate your time with your spouse even more.

4. Share Household Chores

Studies have shown that marriages are weaker in households where one spouse performs all the household chores. Therefore, you should split chores with your spouse and make sure that you are both doing your part to keep your home and family life in good shape.

5. Get on the Same Page Financially

If you are a spender, and your spouse is a saver, your marriage can be difficult. Be sure to discuss your financial goals as a couple and outline what you will both do in order to meet them. Do you hope to have a certain amount in savings? Are you trying to pay off your mortgage early? Work to reach an agreement with your spouse on how best to work toward these goals.

6. Compliment Your Spouse

Make an effort to praise your spouse, both in private and in public. Even if they seem embarrassed, they are bound to remember the compliments you give them for years to come.

7. Keep Stress to a Minimum

Life can be difficult at times. Since daily stresses can take a toll on your marriage, you should try to keep your tension levels at a minimum. Meditate, ask family members for help, take a warm bath, participate in a hobby, or do anything else that can reduce your stress.
